There is a great deal of ambiguity surrounding the origins of golf, however modern golf dates back to 15-centruy Scotland. The first written record of golf is a document detailing the games banishment by James II, King of Scotland. This document is dated 1457, and it was banished because it caused distraction from other sports, such as archery. In 1502, the ban was lifted by King James IV, who became a golfer himself. Golf became popular throughout Scotland, and to this day there are still golf courses that date back to the mid, and late 16th century.

As golf became more popular throughout the world, the course gained a few standardizations and rules were established. A golf course consists of either 9 or 18 holes, however, each course is different. A golf courses uses the natural setting to create challenges and traps. There are also several man-made challenges throughout the course. These challenges consist of ponds, lakes, wooded areas, sand traps, and uneven ground. The landscape is designed to make getting a hole-in-one difficult and tests the abilities of the golfers.
