Over the last two and a half decades, Pankaj Saharia from Shrewsbury,
Massachusetts has worked tirelessly as a structural engineer. To
enhance his professional career, he has fostered a ten-year relationship
with the United States Green Building Council. The USGBC is a
non-profit organization that seeks to promote environmentally friendly
building design and construction. Much of its noted success is thanks in
part to the development of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) rating system.
The organization endeavors to
transform the way buildings are designed, constructed, and managed
through the tenets of the LEED system. Designing structures and spaces
that are healthier for the environment and human population is a chief
concern of the group and its many members. The USGBC works with
community leaders, industry experts, LEED professionals, and market
researchers to see their goals to fruition.
The USGBC was developed in 1993 by Rick Fedrizzi, Mike Italiano, and David Gottfried. These three industry professionals had spent years witnessing the wastefulness and excess that was abundant in the construction field. Believing that there was a better way to design and erect structures, they sought to create an organization which worked to that end. The council's very first meeting was held at the American Institute of Architects and hosted more than sixty representatives from industry firms as well as many non-profit organizations with similar goals.
